Leakage current test and measurement is the most important test in electrical safety tests
"Leakage current" (or "touch current") refers to the current flowing through the human body to the ground due to insufficient insulation or improper grounding between the internal power supply and accessible conductive parts. Therefore, the presence of leakage current on any accessible conductive part creates a potential shock hazard to anyone who comes into contact with that part. Compliance laboratories or Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL) typically perform Type tests on any mains powered product sample during the design stage. Once type testing is completed, with the exception of medical products, further leakage current testing during production is generally not required. However, for safety reasons, leakage current tests are often performed on the production lines of medical products.
GW Instek provides two leakage current test and measurement instruments, namely GLC-10000 and GLC-9000, which measure leakage current by using a human body model or network (MD Measurement Device) connected to the instrument under test. There are many different types of leakage current: earth leakage current, enclosure leakage current, and patient leakage current and patient auxiliary current. The basic differences between them depend on how the person comes into contact with the product.
How to choose a suitable model?
Leakage Current Tester – GLC-10000 is suitable for leakage current testing of medical, lighting and general electrical equipment. This tester provides 11 measurement networks (or called measurement devices MD), simulating the human body to conduct leakage current tests on the EUT (equipment under test) under normal conditions (NC) or single fault conditions (SFC) to comply with specific standards or regulations such as IEC, UL, JIS... etc.
Leakage current tester – GLC-9000 is mainly used for leakage current testing of general electrical equipment. The tester provides 9 measurement networks (or called measurement devices MD) to simulate the human body when conducting leakage current tests on the EUT (equipment under test) to comply with specific standards or regulations such as IEC, UL, JIS... etc.
GLC-10000 meets future expansion needs
In response to new regulations and future MD expansion needs, GLC-10000 provides a comprehensive expansion solution.
Conclusion:
Based on the above compatibility and differences, if it is the leakage current measurement of General Electric products, users can still successfully complete the measurement task by continuing to use the GLC-9000. If it is for the measurement of "lamps" or "laboratory equipment" products, it must be replaced with GLC-10000 to meet the requirements.
If it is for leakage current testing of medical products, it is recommended to use GLC-10000. It not only retains the narrative method of the old regulations, but also has a leakage current name that complies with the latest regulations, meets the measurement frequency range (0.1Hz ~ 1MHz), and provides switches (S10/S12/S13/S14/S15/E) used to ground the protective ground terminal and chassis to reduce the user's trouble of preparing and controlling the switch by themselves.
In addition, the rear terminal can support 20A output, which is suitable for a wider range of product testing. 2 sets of judgment mechanisms can perform normal and single fault condition measurement and judgment at the same time to save the trouble of repeated settings. The external MD connection terminal can meet the needs of future regulatory changes.
”Sharp tools make good work." Choosing appropriate measurement equipment will not only effectively complete the measurement requirements, but also make the measurement process easy and get twice the result with half the effort.
